Charity car wash to support animals in need

02 Aug 2011

Animal lovers are invited to get their car cleaned to help animals in need this weekend at The Blue Cross animal adoption centre on Kimpton Bottom, near Hitchin.

Blue Cross supporter Charlie Ellington, who runs his own business ‘Charlie’s Car Spa’ in Harpenden, will be washing cars for visitors to the centre from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 6th August. The car washes are free but there will be a suggested donation of £2 per car, with all proceeds going towards the care of the homeless pets at the centre.

Charlie said: "I saw for myself what amazing work The Blue Cross does after adopting my wonderful cat Skip earlier this year. I wanted to help raise some money so they can help more homeless animals, and as I’ve just set up my own business cleaning cars, a charity car wash seemed like the perfect idea.

"A visit to The Blue Cross is a great day out, particularly during the school holidays when the kids are at a loose end. Why not bring along the whole family to meet some of the animals at the centre? The kids can even help out with the car washing if they want to!"

The charity car wash will be the first public event to take place at The Blue Cross since it featured on Channel 4’s Undercover Boss programme last month. Staff and volunteers who starred on TV will be on hand to talk about their experiences over tea and cake, including animal welfare assistant Phil Bandy and dedicated volunteer Brian Weatherley.

Visitors will also be able to look around the adoption centre and meet some of the animals who are looking for homes. There are currently 24 dogs, 18 cats and 12 rabbits being cared for on site, all desperate for a family to love. If you can offer a good home to a deserving animal, please contact the centre on 01438 832 232.

The Blue Cross receives no government funding so it relies on donations and fundraising events to continue its vital work. To find out more, visit www.bluecross.org.uk.
