Rescue animals benefit from £1million pet insurance contributions21 Sep 2012
Blue Cross is celebrating a major landmark after receiving over £1 million pounds from Petplan in the past decade. The valuable funds have gone towards running our 12 rehoming centres and four animal hospitals.
Petplan provides free insurance for the first four weeks to dogs, cats and rabbits rehomed by Blue Cross. Each time a rehomer continues their insurance with Petplan after the initial four weeks, Blue Cross receives 10% of the policy premium and a further 10% each time the policy renews.
Blue Cross encourages all owners to take out pet insurance from a reputable provider to cover increasingly expensive vet bills when a pet becomes sick or injured or has an accident.
Blue Cross CEO Kim Hamilton, said: "As a charity that does not receive any government or lottery funding, we rely solely on donations from the public and valuable funding from our corporate partners.
"Blue Cross helps tens of thousands of animals each year through its network of rehoming centres, veterinary hospitals and clinics. Petplan understands that our primary focus is animal welfare and the income generated from working with them has enabled us to give even more pets a healthy life in a happy home."
Petplan was founded by Patsy Bloom in 1976 from her kitchen in Chiswick in London after she experienced extremely high vet bills. The company was bought by Cornhill Insurance in 1996, later becoming Allianz Insurance in 2007 and remains the UK's leading pet insurance provider.
Simon Masding, Head of Sales and Partnerships at Petplan, said: "Having worked closely with animal charities like Blue Cross for many years we understand the valuable role they play in improving and enhancing animal welfare.
"Ensuring you can afford to cover vet bills gives pet owners peace of mind and we are delighted that people who rehome Blue Cross animals have purchased our insurance and that we, in turn, can give some of that back to the charity to put to good use."
