Liz Walsh, a Blue Cross community vet nurse, has received a special award at the House of Lords from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and The People newspaper for her work on behalf of pets and their owners.

Liz, 31, who works for our animal hospital in Victoria, London, won the 'Animal Welfare Carer Award' in IFAW’s 'Animal Action Awards 2008' for recognition of her work.

The Blue Cross has many clients who depend on their pets for love and companionship, but who are unable to come to a Blue Cross clinic themselves. As a community vet nurse, Liz devotes her time to visiting pets in their homes. As well as providing essential veterinary care to animals, Liz also looks after their human owners, earning her the nickname of ‘guardian angel’. Liz has been known to leave notes all over the houses of clients with Alzheimer’s to help them remember to give their pet medication, or she will pretend to be new if they don’t remember her when she visits. Liz continues to visit elderly, lonely pet owners long after their pet has passed away and also calls her clients before a visit, to see if they need her to do any shopping or helps them around the house after she has treated their pet.

The prestigious awards ceremony took place Tuesday, 14 October, in the House of Lords, hosted by Baroness Gale and presented by IFAW Patron, actress and model Lisa B.

"Liz has made an outstanding contribution to animal and human welfare and we are delighted to be able to give her this award," said IFAW UK Director, Robbie Marsland. "These awards are recognition for those people who have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of animals and their owners, and deserve to be commended for their achievements. We hope Liz's work will inspire others to help animals in London and across the country."

"Liz is truly an animal welfare hero and I am delighted to be able to present this important award in recognition of her achievements" said Baroness Gale.
