Lucky escape for curious kitten after window fall

A tiny kitten is recovering in Blue Cross care after she fell from a first floor window.

Ten-week-old Pippy was brought to our Torbay rehoming centre in need of vet treatment after taking a tumble from an open window.

She seemed to be having trouble with her back legs when she arrived and was in shock after her fall. Unfortunately, her owners could not afford to pay for her treatment, so brought her to Blue Cross so we could find her a new home.

Pippy was immediately taken to the vets where she was examined and given pain relief. Luckily she had no broken bones, but may have suffered some nerve damage which is affecting her back legs.

Laura Boyle, Rehoming Centre Manager at Torbay Blue cross said: “Many people think that cats are safe when up high as their balance is so good, but sadly it’s surprisingly common for them to fall out of windows.

"It usually happens during the summer months – often they’re curious about the smells and sounds and can quite easily lose their footing on a window sill.

“Many cats are seriously injured or even killed when they fall out of windows, so Pippy is one lucky little kitten. Despite her injuries, she is a typical cheeky kitten who loves to run around and play. We’re monitoring her here at the centre and once she is fully recovered she’ll be ready to head off to a happy new home.”

To keep your cats safe and still enjoy a cooling breeze during the summer months, we advise either installing tip and tilt windows which allow air into the room without offering access outside to curious cats, or using netting or a screen across windows when they are open to prevent the cats getting out.
