Functions: Rescue, Rehab and Rehome, Loan Scheme, Sanctuary Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary (CLAS), near Belfast, is the only equine welfare charity based in Northern Ireland. Equine cruelty and abuse is a huge problem in Northern Ireland and, despite being a small organisation, CLAS is committed to making a big difference and has made tremendous progress over the past few years. CLAS aims to rescue, rehabilitate and, where possible, rehome horses and ponies saved from suffering. Education is a huge part of CLAS activities. In addition to providing a centre for rehabilitating horses, CLAS assists with rehabilitating young offenders though its animal assisted therapy programmes. Education of horse owners is facilitated though workshops, including subjects such as donkey care and management of Laminitis. Education of the wider horse-using community includes addressing horse dealers and markets to introduce basic welfare provisions to improve horse welfare.
