Porthcawl Animal Welfare Society

Porthcawl Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) was formed in 1975 and registered as a charity in 1979 (charity number: 509383). It is dedicated to helping unwanted or abandoned animals, whatever the cause. Dogs are housed in kennels rented from a boarding kennels in Porthcawl, while cats are housed in a small cattery in Bridgend. The charity is run by a team of volunteers, although one part-time member of staff is employed to oversee admission and rehoming of dogs.

The objectives of the charity are:

  • To provide for the care and protection of animals of all kinds in need of attention, from whatever cause
  • To advance public education in the health, care, management, training and control of domestic animals in particular

Animals are assessed for their suitability for a new home, and home visits are made to all prospective owners. All animals are vaccinated and micro-chipped and all animals over six months are neutered or spayed.

In addition to its rehoming work, PAWS also trap and neuter feral cats, prior to release into managed colonies – in 2003, more than 30 such cats were helped. Also in 2003, more than 100 dogs and 90 cats were taken in and rehomed.

The charity is funded largely by a shop in Porthcawl, but other events, such as a very successful annual Dog Show, are held throughout the year.
