Having a horse can be rewarding but you need to be ready to provide the care it needs for probably many years to come. If you are interested in taking a horse on loan from us, please think carefully first about the responsibilities and commitment required to give the animal a good quality of life. Anyone who has horse experience will tell you what a great responsibility they represent.

If you do decide to take a Blue Cross horse on permanent loan you will be responsible for providing the following:

  • Adequate food (hay and hard feed) and a supply of fresh water
  • Good, safe grazing
  • Access to a stable/shelter with adequate bedding
  • Company – horses are herd animals and are generally not happy alone
  • Veterinary care – both routine (vaccination/worming/teeth rasping) and emergency
  • Regular visits from the farrier – neglected feet can cause major problems
  • Time – anything to do with horses takes a lot of time

You will also need a good basic knowledge of horsemanship, especially if you intend to look after the horse yourself.
