Yorkie left in shopping trolley cries out for missing owner

The Blue Cross pet charity is appealing for the owner of a Yorkshire Terrier to come forward after the little dog was discovered in a shopping trolley in Hackney yesterday (16 January). The sweet natured Yorkie, nicknamed 'Daisy' by staff, was found in the chequered trolley outside the charity's mobile veterinary clinic and is now being cared for by The Blue Cross until the owners can be traced.

Daisy, who is aged between seven and nine years old, was found by Blue Cross veterinary nurse Stephanie Derry, who was on duty at the mobile clinic yesterday. Daisy's owner is thought to have taken the dog to The Blue Cross clinic for veterinary treatment but wandered off before she had been seen and never returned. 

Stephanie said: "There was a queue of people waiting to see the vet as usual and I spotted little Daisy peeking out of the shopping trolley.  Some of the other clients said that her owner had gone off to find a loo but never came back.  We waited all afternoon and then searched around the area but we couldn't find her so I took Daisy back to The Blue Cross with me."

Back at The Blue Cross animal hospital in Victoria, Daisy was checked over by vets to ensure she was in good health.  Unfortunately she was not microchipped or wearing a collar or tag with her owner's address details, which means there is no way of tracing her owner.

Mark Bossley, Blue Cross veterinary surgeon said: "Daisy seems to have been very well looked after. The fur around her face has been carefully trimmed away from her eyes and her claws recently clipped. She is fit and healthy and we are convinced she is a much loved pet whose owner must be missing her. If for some reason her owner can no longer look after her, we would still like to hear from them in case we can help."

Blue Cross animal hospitals treat the pets of people who cannot afford private vets' fees. In addition, Blue Cross mobile clinics offer charitable veterinary treatment for pets whose owners may struggle to reach the hospitals.  The clinic goes to Hackney Town Hall car park every Wednesday, Bethnal Green Market every Monday and Islington Town Hall every Thursday. Opening times are from 10.30 to 12.00 and 13.30 to 15.30.
