Happy days for ‘Daisy’ the shopping trolley dog |
|||||
29/05/2008 An abandoned dog discovered in a shopping trolley outside a Blue Cross mobile veterinary clinic in January has now settled happily into her new home. Vet nurses from the charity nicknamed the Yorkshire terrier Daisy, after she was found during a weekly visit to Hackney. She was then cared for by staff at the animal hospital in Victoria who tried to trace her owner. Daisys story was featured in several newspapers which led to her owner contacting The Blue Cross. The elderly lady explained that she had been struggling to cope with the little dog, whose real name was Lulu. She had made the decision to give her up but was too upset to hand Lulu over in person. After receiving necessary veterinary treatment Lulu was transferred to The Blue Cross animal adoption centre in Burford where the search began to find her a new home. Luckily for Lulu it wasnt too long before a new owner came forward. Mrs Bissell from Witney in Oxfordshire said: I had recently lost my Yorkie, Pippa, to cancer and was heartbroken. When I found out The Blue Cross had a homeless Yorkie girl I just knew I had to meet her. She is a delightful little thing and I absolutely love her. The Blue Cross asks pet owners who can no longer look after their animal, for whatever reason, to get in touch with them for advice. Pets who are abandoned are often harder to rehome because there is little or no known information about their background. Elizabeth Stevens, Blue Cross animal welfare officer at Victoria said: The Blue Cross understands that taking on a pet can sometimes be overwhelming and that an owners circumstances may change. We ask pet owners facing difficulties to talk to The Blue Cross before giving them up. We can offer lots of support and advice and if necessary find new homes for deserving dogs just like Lulu. Blue Cross animal hospitals and mobile clinic services treat the pets of people who cannot afford private vets fees. Blue Cross animal adoption centres take in and rehome thousands of cats, dogs and small pets every year. ENDS Notes to editors Images of Daisy in her new home and with the shopping trolley are available.
