OLDER PEOPLE AND COMPANION ANIMALS: ENHANCING QUALITY OF LIFE

A major conference has been organised by the Society for Companion Animal Studies (SCAS) to address the many obstacles faced by older people who would benefit from contact with pets.

Recent research has demonstrated the many ways in which pet ownership can enrich the lives of older people, principally in terms of their health, social and emotional well-being. Despite this, many older people have encountered problems including being forced to give up their much-loved companions when they are unable to find access to accommodation with positive pets policies.

The conference, that is being run by SCAS in conjunction with the charity Age Concern, will be of interest to anyone concerned with the well-being of older people, particularly to those who support older people - either on a professional or voluntary basis - including GPs, social workers, health visitors, care home providers and sheltered housing managers.

Taking place from 10am at the Charity Centre, 24 Stephenson Way, London NW1 2DP on Wednesday 4 May, delegate places will cost £30 or £25 for SCAS members. Lunch is included in the price.
