With heavy snowfall affecting much of the UK today, animal charity The Blue Cross is reminding pet owners of the special needs of pets during this cold snap. Blue Cross spokeswoman, Su Crown, said: "We all know that dogs love playing in the snow and cats may think frozen ponds are a blast, but not all animals enjoy the cold weather. "Make sure your pets have protection from the wet and cold, and think about moving small animals inside for shelter. Check they have plenty to eat and that their source of water isn't frozen. It sounds like common sense but Blue Cross vets see many animals affected by the cold at this time of year, so make sure your furry friends are safe and well." Typical problems experienced by pets in cold weather are: DOGS: Paws becoming cracked due to salt on the pavements - check your dog's paws. CATS: Falling through half frozen ponds in back gardens SMALL ANIMALS (rabbits, guinea pigs, etc): Dying of hypothermia. The Blue Cross suggests moving the hutch inside where it is protected from the rain, wind and snow. But if you put it the garage, make sure it is well ventilated as a build up of exhaust fumes can kill! -ends- Attached: Gordon - a homeless spaniel - having fun in the snow at The Blue Cross's Lewknor animal adoption centre today Media contact: Su Crown Direct line: 0207 932 4066 Mobile: 07880 781 637 Notes to editors A high resolution photo of Gordon is available on request. The Blue Cross is Britain's pet charity, providing practical support, information and advice for pet and horse owners. Through its network of animal adoption centres it rehomes thousands of animals each year. Its hospitals provide veterinary care for the pets of people who cannot afford private vets' fees. All animals rehomed by The Blue Cross are microchipped, vaccinated, neutered and given six weeks free pet insurance. More handy hints for pet owners are available at www.bluecross.org.uk. |
