Mature cats crying out for new homes

The Blue Cross animal adoption centre in Cambridge is looking for permanent homes for the older cats in its care. The centre currently has 11 cats aged over 10-years-old and is encouraging prospective cat owners to look beyond their age, particularly as these cats may have many more years ahead of them.

Mitsey is a 14-year-old tabby cat who came to the Cambridge centre after her owners moved house and could not take Mitsey with them. She loves seeking out a sunny spot for a nap and spending the evening being stroked. In return she will be a devoted, loving companion.

Florrie and Poppy are mother and daughter who were brought to the centre earlier this year after their owner could no longer look after them. Florrie is a very sweet, 15-year-old, short-haired cat and her daughter is 14 and a semi-longhaired tabby. They would both like a new home together where they can return lots of fuss with plenty of affection.

Susie is 11 and a shorthaired black cat who came to the charity after her owner went into a care home. Although she is a bit shy, she is a very loving cat when she comes out of her shell.

Alan Maskell, Blue Cross centre manager at Cambridge said: ”We would like these cats to find new homes soon but, unfortunately, some people assume that cats aged over ten are at the end of their lives. However, like us, cats are living longer, indeed the oldest cat we had in our care was twenty nine. Most of these so-called older cats are merely middle-aged and still have plenty of life to live and love to give.”

The Blue Cross vaccinates, neuters and microchips all animals before they are re-homed. Animals also receive an initial six weeks’ free pet insurance, which the new owner can then choose to continue, whatever the age of the cat.

Anyone who thinks they can offer any of the cats in our care a home should contact The Blue Cross on 01223 350153 or visit the centre at 20 Garlic Row, Cambridge, CB5 8HW.
