Hidden cost of the Easter Bunny

The cost of owning a pet rabbit can total £3000 in its lifetime – which is equal to that of a family cat - according to Blue Cross research.

With Easter just behind us, parents are more than likely to hear the pleas from their children for a rabbit. However, with many rabbits handed over to The Blue Cross by owners who assume the cost is very little, the charity is urging people to consider the costs of caring for a happy bunny.

Blue Cross adoption centre manager Julie Stone, says: “For anyone about to get their own Easter bunny, just remember, rabbits are not cheap pets. Keeping one healthy means buying a hutch they can stand on tiptoe in, giving them fresh vegetables, and vaccinating them annually.”

The average rabbit lives for seven years, with upkeep costs totalling around £3000.  Rabbits can also develop health and behavioural problems if not cared for appropriately.

“People should not get a rabbit expecting them to cost the same as a hamster – they don’t!” adds Julie.
