The Blue Cross animal charity welcomes the consultation on dangerous dog laws announced by Defra today. The charity regularly advises government on animal welfare issues and has been calling for a review of the dangerous dog legislation. "We are pleased that the government has responded to our calls for an urgent review of the Dangerous Dogs Act, which has unfortunately failed to deal with the increasing problem of dog attacks and anti-social behaviour. We hope this will lead to more practical and enforceable measures to control dangerous dogs and protect the public before tragic attacks occur", says Steve Goody, director of external affairs for The Blue Cross. Steve continued: "We would like future legislation to focus on the legal duty of the dog owner, who must ultimately be responsible for the behaviour of their dog and ensuring that it is not a risk to the public. We also believe clear penalties should be introduced for those whose dogs are out of control and enforced by all the relevant authorities including the police and dog wardens." |
