The Blue Cross is featuring in a TV documentary this weekend. The programme on dog breeding is being broadcast on More4 after Crufts on Sunday at 9pm. It features an interview with our head of animal behaviour, Julie Bedford, who explains the work we do to retrain and socialise unwanted dogs so that they can go on to live in an environment best suited to their needs. Julie says: At The Blue Cross we take great care in matching dogs with new owners, but were all too aware that people can choose to purchase a dog with a few clicks on the internet, without seeing the puppy or its parents. A responsible breeder will be able to help you decide whether a certain breed of dog is for you, but its up to you to ask the right questions and to be realistic about your lifestyle. She adds: We all know that dogs are good for people. What Id like to see is more people being good for dogs. Do your research and make sure that if, for example, you opt for a working dog, youre sure that you can provide the mental and physical stimulation they need. Its important to remember that small dogs need just as much training and mental activity as larger breeds.
