Dog owners are being urged to look-out for broken glass while walking with their pets.

Kate Goode, from Cullompton, Devon, was taking her pet dogs out for a walk recently when one of them became injured and needed an operation.

Sox and Tink were playing beside a river when they both jumped in for a swim.

However, Tink, a collie-cross, became distressed and when Ms Goode investigated she found that the pet had slashed his paw open on a broken bottle.

The concerned owner has issued a warning to animal lovers to check for broken bottles when walking their pets.

"I would hate another family pet to have to go through the same as Tink," Ms Goode told the Mid Devon Star.

"Tink has had to have internal stitches in her pad and stitches to close the wound under a full anaesthetic and is now on painkillers and antibiotics."

Recently a dog from Chichester needed a life-saving operation after broken glass severed every artery in his paw.
