A Hampshire dog has become a star in his village after his image was painted on a pub sign.

Charlie, a cocker spaniel, now appears on the sign for the Gamekeeper, in Ashurst.

Mark Thompson, landlord of the premises, explained that he decided to use Charlie's image because he is such a friendly dog.

In addition, Mr Thompson stated that he tries to cater for pets as much as possible in the pub and having Charlie portrayed on the sign may promote this.

"People are always delighted when they meet Charlie and recognise him from his painted portrait. Being situated in the middle of the New Forest we get lots of dog walkers," he told the Daily Echo.

"Charlie welcomes all visitors and we make sure there are water bowls available for his canine friends as well as refreshing pints for the two-legged ramblers."

A recent survey by the Campaign to Protect Rural England showed that pub signs are considered the most iconic image of the country.
