A moggie who spent 14 days trapped in a container ship is recovering from his ordeal.

Called Pharaoh by his rescuers, the creature was recently discovered onboard a vessel that had travelled 3,000 miles, the Daily Gazette reports.

The cat's long journey began in Port Said, Egypt, and ended when workers stumbled on the animal in Felixstowe, Suffolk.

Despite his epic voyage, the cat was not dangerously ill when he was found and has since been recovering in quarantine at Pan Air Services cattery, Essex.

Before the pet is placed with new owners he will needed to be declared free of diseases, such as rabies.

Jean Paris, from the animal centre, stated that Pharaoh is a friendly cat who appears healthy.

She told the paper: "When you get cats out of containers quite often they're wild, but I'm sure he must have had a very loving home because of the way he is with people."

According to the Norwich Evening News, cat owner Ruth Ingle recently urged pet owners to check their animals' microchip is still active if the devices were implanted many years ago, after her moggie's chip ceased to work.
