As well as providing rehoming and veterinary services, The Blue Cross operates a number of valuable services. These services have been created because we recognise and understand the importance of pets in family life and much of our work focuses on this human-animal bond. Pet Bereavement Support Service is a national service for those suffering the loss of, or separation from, a much-loved pet. The education programme rolled out nationally into the school curriculum this year, and aims to educate children at primary school level about responsible pet ownership. Mobile clinics in a vast city like London with only a handful of charity animal hospitals, some pet owners are not able to travel the distance to a vet nor can they afford private veterinary treatment. Our clinic provides basic veterinary attention, vaccination, micro chipping and advice on animal care. London ambulance service - providing a vital lifeline to animals which otherwise would never receive medical attention. The ambulance service helps many housebound and physically unable through illness, disability or the frailness of age to cope with the difficulties of getting a pet to a hospital. Community veterinary nurse scheme The scheme was introduced at our Victoria animal hospital at the end of 2001, and now also runs out of our Merton hospital as well. The role of the nurses is to visit elderly and disabled clients to help with giving treatments and to monitor progress. Animal welfare vet grants The Blue Cross aims to help owners who do not live in the vicinity of its animal hospitals, by operating a welfare scheme to assist with the cost of treatment at private veterinary practices.
