Giant rabbit abandoned with just a note to tell his tale

A giant rabbit is now in safe hands after being abandoned in a box with a note from owners saying they couldn’t afford his vet bill.

The bunny, nicknamed Nivens McTwisp after the white rabbit in a recent film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, had a suspected broken leg and was dumped in a box on somebody’s doorstep before being handed into our Grimsby animal hospital.

The note says: “This Rabbit has been dropped; we think its leg may be broken. We are sorry; we can’t look after, we aren’t capable. We hope it is ok.” (sic)

X-rays have revealed his wonky leg is either an abnormality he was born with or a very old injury he has adapted to over time, and cannot be fixed.

But despite his leg problem and his whopping 6kg weight, Nivens is content enough to hop about and isn’t in any pain.

Unusually for a rabbit, Nivens isn't a big fan of carrots but he does like to munch on kale, swede, apples and grass.

Nivens will soon be off to a Blue Cross rehoming centre so he can begin the search for a loving new home.
