Volunteering as part of your placement
We involve volunteers on a variety of placements here at Blue Cross. Whether you are looking to complete your Duke of Edinburgh award or gain useful work experience, we could help! Best of all – you’ll know your time is going towards helping the many sick and homeless pets in our care.
Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme
Do you want to make a difference to the lives of pets while completing your Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award? Then sign up with us to complete the volunteering section of your Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.
Blue Cross is an approved activity provider for the volunteering section of your award. This means the volunteering opportunities we provide have been approved by the DofE scheme as meeting their standards and can count towards the achievement of your award!
We have opportunities across the UK for DofE participants to help out in our fabulous charity shops as well as some opportunities in our rehoming centres. You’ll receive all the training and support you need as well as gaining some great experience.

National Citizen Service
Blue Cross is registered as a social action partner with the National Citizen Service (NCS). We welcome participation from NCS participants, whether you are hoping to volunteer with us as part of your social action project, or you are a graduate from the scheme looking for further development opportunities. Find more information about the sorts of opportunities we have by clicking the 'Get Involved' button below.
If you are an NCS Provider and would like to request a visit from one of our Education Team to provide a workshop for your group please book a talk.
School work experience
Looking for work experience and want to know you’re making a real difference to pets' lives at the same time? Then enquire about a work experience placement at one of our 54 shops, or in our rehoming centres. Placement length varies in each service and some services have a minimum age for work experience. The minimum age range for services is 14-16, depending on the service. Please get in touch with us for more information and how to apply.
College work placements
If you are on an animal related course at college then Blue Cross might be able to help support you to gain work experience in an animal environment at one of our rehoming centres or animal hospitals. Placements fill up quickly so we recommended that you register your interest as soon as you can. Please email us at [email protected] to do this.
Veterinary nurse work experience
If you are training to be a veterinary nurse and need work experience then our four animal hospitals have a limited number of placements available. They can be filled up to six months in advance so be quick to register your interest by getting in touch with us.
Community service order
Blue Cross can sometimes provide opportunities to those looking to complete their community service order. Our shops have the most placements on offer but we can also sometimes accommodate people in our rehoming centres, depending on location. Normally you’ll need to get the person who coordinates this for you to get in touch with us to check availability and to arrange the details.
Job centre placements
We’re happy to take volunteer applications from those looking for work experience and have been referred by their local job centre. We can only accommodate those who are on a voluntary placement and can’t accept anyone who is signed up for a mandatory work placement, eg you risk your benefits being stopped if you don’t complete the placement.
