Dogs and sewage water in our seas and rivers

There have been recent reports of sewage water contaminating seas and rivers in the UK. Find out how this can affect your dog.

Research has shown that sewage is regularly contaminating waterways in England and Wales, with the levels of harmful bacteria in sea water reaching concerning levels at some beaches. During the warm weather, this can be a concern if your dog enjoys swimming in seas and rivers.

Can sewage water in seas and rivers be a risk for my dog?

Swallowing sewage contaminated water can cause sickness and diarrhoea in people, and your dog could be at risk too.

If you know that the water in your area is poor, you may want to consider stopping your dog from swimming in these areas. Look out for local warnings before you head to the beach, or check the local bathing water quality score before you let your dog swim. It's safer to visit areas where the water quality is higher.

Note

Water quality is often worse shortly after heavy rain fall, so avoid taking your dog swimming after bad weather.

What should I do if my dog drinks sewage water?

If your dog drinks contaminated water, it can cause vomiting or diarrhoea. If you notice these symptoms shortly after swimming, speak to your vet for further advice.

If your dog does show symptoms after swimming in contaminated water, you can also make your local authorities aware.
