Since April 2008, The Blue Cross equine centre at Northiam became a dedicated sanctuary for permanently retired Blue Cross horses.

The Northiam centre caters mainly for retired horses that are not suitable for rehoming because they are very elderly or have medical conditions that require special care. It is also home to a small number of youngsters who are not quite ready to be transferred to one of the other centres for training and rehoming.

The land that the Northiam equine centre is based on was donated to The Blue Cross by a local lady called Kitty Comport in 1951. The centre now has 38 acres of land including some woodland with on-site stabling, field shelters and an all-weather arena. It has a capacity for 30 horses and ponies. Our new walkways, for visitors to view our residents are open at the times below.   

NEWS UPDATE: It has been acknowledged that the current Blue Cross centre at Northiam is outdated and in desperate need of development, requiring significant investment. The charity will seek to raise the funds to move to a more suitable location in the South East where it can deliver its services more effectively. The Northiam centre will remain open until a new facility has been established, and the future of the land will be decided once a new location has been found. At this point the small animal rehoming activity will relocate to the new site and the resting and retired horses and ponies will be transferred to Blue Cross equine centres in Burford, Oxfordshire and Rolleston, Staffordshire. WINTER/SPRING OPENING TIMES:

We are open 10am - 3pm daily

All visitors should report to reception and last visitors are asked to arrive by 2.30pm. Visits to the centre by groups or clubs are welcome by appointment.

Please note the Centre is closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
