CBD for dogs
CBD (cannabidiol) oil is an increasingly common treatment in humans. But more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness in animals.
Is CBD oil safe for dogs?
Although there is no evidence that CBD is toxic to dogs, we do not have enough research around its effectiveness, the correct dose, side effects and how it interacts with other medications in pets.
The Veterinary Medical Directorate writes: "While your pet may possess many human-like qualities, this type of medication could have very different and unwanted effects on them."
There are also no current CBD products that have been authorised for use in animals in the UK. If you are seriously considering trying CBD oil with your pet, you will need to talk to a vet.
Important
Legally, only your vet can prescribe a legal human CBD product for your pet. CBD oil should never be given in the place of licensed veterinary products, and your vet will advise you about the best medications for your pet.
Is CBD oil beneficial for dogs?
There is currently no scientific evidence that CBD oil is beneficial to dogs.
Some studies have shown that CBD may help dogs with arthritis, as they seem to show increased activity and less pain after taking it. However, Canine Arthritis Management's current position is that: "there are currently too many uncertainties about whether CBD supplements are beneficial for dogs with osteoarthritis, as there is no suitable licensed animal pharmaceutical product on the UK market that has proven efficacy and established safety margins for dosing."
When looking into whether this helps dogs with epilepsy, it’s been found that CBD has no effect.
No studies have been carried out for CBD use in cats.
What is CBD oil?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the chemicals found in cannabis, but CBD in the UK comes from hemp. CBD derived from marijuana is illegal in this country.
Unlike cannabis, CBD oil does not contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is toxic to animals. THC is the active chemical in marijuana that makes it psychoactive.
