Blue Cross partners with Mars Petcare UK and the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes to support animal shelters across the UK

Today, Blue Cross has partnered with Mars Petcare UK, Battersea and the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) to call on the nation to donate much needed funds to local animal shelters in an effort to support not only the humans working there, but importantly the pets they care for.

The move comes as Mars Petcare UK commissioned a survey into the impact pets have had on their owners during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The nationwide survey revealed that 80 percent of pet owners believe their pet has got them through the Covid-19 pandemic, with 86 percent having bonded with their pet even more since the start of lockdown.

The results come as no surprise – we know that pets can offer unconditional love, support and comfort, which is especially important during these uncertain times. We knew this when we opened our doors in 1897 and we saw this with the rise in pet adoptions ahead of lockdown.

However, what did come as a surprise is that this survey revealed that 19 percent of pet owners were not aware of the difficulties animal shelters are facing as a result of this pandemic.

Blue Cross prides itself on never closing its doors to pets in need, neither world war forced us to shut down, and our doors remain open now. But right now, our services are temporarily limited and it’s something none of us could have ever expected.

We’re not alone. Animal shelters and rescue organisations across the UK are feeling the effects of the pandemic with many forced to close to the public, operate with limited staff and cancel vital fundraising events. Research from our partner the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes has shown that 61 per cent of animal rescue organisations have had to reduce staff numbers, while 55 per cent of fundraising income has been cut in half. Some are even struggling to provide food and important supplies for the animals in their care which is not something we will stand idly by.

We’ve seen the support from businesses, manufactures and the general public but this needs to continue and be pushed further. This is why we’ve partnered with Mars Petcare UK, Battersea and ADCH to call on the nation to donate what they can do their local animal shelters now!

It’s clear that lockdown has shown us the try value and power of pets but it’s also highlighted the importance of our shelters and the animals who depend on them.

To keep homeless pets safe during the coronavirus pandemic, Brits can donate to the Blue Cross online or to their local animal shelter.
