White kitten Tiny Tim reaches out his front left paw to play with a red and green ball

Tiny Tim home for Christmas

A young kitten will be happily spending Christmas in a loving home after he was rescued seconds before being crushed in a bin lorry. He was just two-days-old when he was cruelly discarded in a dustbin along with household rubbish. Thankfully, a quick thinking refuse collector heard his tiny cries and fished him out of the trash to the safety of the Blue Cross Animal Hospital in Merton, south London.

Weighing just 93g, less than a satsuma, the little white kitten was filthy, cold and hungry. He was transferred to the charity’s Victoria Animal Hospital for urgent 24-hour care. He was given the name ‘Tiny Tim’ and needed to be hand fed every two hours and, with his eyes not yet open as a newborn, he was kept in an incubator for warmth. When he was strong enough he was transferred to the Blue Cross Animal Rehoming Centre in Burford, Oxfordshire for continued care and to start the search for a new home.

Amanda Rumball, London Animal Welfare Officer at Blue Cross said: “Tiny Tim is a lucky little mite. What may have happened to his siblings is just unbearable to think about. We are so happy he is now in a loving home where he is happy, healthy and fed, which is all pets want for Christmas.”

Tiny Tim now shares his new home with Oskie, another Blue Cross rescue kitten who was the sole survivor from his litter. Although three-legged Oskie had to have his hind leg amputated early in his life after an infection, the pair are best friends and love spending lots of time playing and snuggling up together.

The ongoing cost of living crisis is a major concern. Many pets, like Tiny Tim, could face hunger, illness or abandonment this festive season. Blue Cross is dedicated to helping as many pets and their people as it can, but the escalating costs and increased demand for its services are pushing charity resources to the limit.
