Wanted: peanut butter!

Homeless and abandoned Blue Cross dogs are going nuts for peanut butter – and would love to get their paws on more of it.

Dogs at our rehoming centres adore the nutty paste and enjoy it as an occasional treat. We use it to help train dogs and put it in toys to keep them mentally stimulated in kennels.

Kellie Brooks, Centre Manager at Blue Cross in Hertfordshire, says: “We help over 2,500 dogs each year across our rehoming centres, so we get through a fair few jars of the stuff. We really hope people will help spread the word about our appeal as it really benefits the dogs we care for, but like any treat, it should be given in moderation.

“Our dogs enjoy licking it out of Kongs and rawhides – it can keep them entertained for hours, which is a great way of keeping them occupied in kennels while they are waiting for new homes.”

Most brands of peanut butter are safe for canine consumption, but make sure check the ingredients carefully before giving it to your dog.

“There are a small handful of peanut butter brands that contain Xylitol, an artificial sweetener, which is toxic to dogs. Most peanut butter is fine, but it’s worth checking the ingredients if you do want to give it to your dog,” says Kellie.

Tye (pictured) is just one of the 240 dogs currently in the care of Blue Cross. The six-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, who is a big fan of peanut butter, is looking for a new home at the Blue Cross rehoming centre in Hertfordshire after being found as a stray.

Kellie Brooks adds: “Blue Cross is totally reliant on public donations and we are very grateful for any help people can give, even if it’s a jar of peanut butter or two.”
