Why do cats eat grass?
Seeing your cat eat grass may seem strange – find out why they do it and whether it's safe.
Is it safe for my cat to eat grass?
Yes, eating grass is perfectly safe for your cat and lot of cats really enjoy it. It's also thought that grass contains some nutrients that cats need to stay healthy.
Why do cats like eating grass?
No one knows from a scientific point of view why cats eat grass, but there are many theories about why they might enjoy it. Some believe that grass:
- contains extra nutrients that cats need in their diet, such as folic acid
- can aid your cat's digestive system, helping to break down hairballs so they can pass them naturally rather than cough them up
Are there any dangers to cats eating grass?
While your cat can enjoy fresh grass and it's nothing to be worried about, there are a couple of things to be careful of:
- Toxic plants – make sure that all toxic plants have been removed from your home and garden so your cat is not tempted to eat these instead of the grass
- Chemicals and pesticides – avoid using any pesticides, herbicides or chemicals on your grass because they're toxic to cats if eaten
- Irritation – while it is very rare, grass blades can become lodged in the back of the nose causing irritation for your cat
Tip
Growing a small tray of grass inside your home can add to your cat's indoor experience. It also encourages them to eat the grass in your home, rather than outdoors where it could contain toxins.
Why do cats eat grass and vomit?
Cats are unable to digest large amounts of grass, which means sometimes, eating too much grass can make them throw up.
If you're worried about the amount of grass your cat is eating or concerned that your cat is getting sick from it, contact your vet.
