Dog playing with water bottle treat dispenser

Dog treat dispenser

Keep your dog entertained with this easy-to-make tasty treat dispenser.

Working out a puzzle can keep your dog stimulated both mentally and physically. This is really useful for dogs with very active brains, who may also be prone to chewing if they're bored. If you’re looking to give your four-legged friend a new challenge, try this simple DIY dog treat dispenser.

Important

Treats should be given occasionally and alongside a well-balanced diet. Always check with your vet if your dog has any special dietary requirements.

What you'll need:

  • A used, empty eight ounce plastic water bottle
  • A craft knife
  • Some small dog treats

How to make a treat dispenser for your dog

  1. Get a used plastic bottle and wash it out thoroughly
  2. Remove any labels but keep the lid
  3. Look at the size of the treats you want to put into the bottle and use that as a measurement on what size to cut the holes in your bottle. You’ll need to cut two holes on different sides of the bottle. The holes need to be only slightly bigger than the treats you’re planning on using, so they can fall out when nudged but not pour out.
  4. Pop your dog’s treats into the bottle through the open top and then replace the lid tightly
  5. Give the dispenser to your dog and watch them figure out how to get the treats!

Important

Supervise your dog at all times while they are playing with the treat dispenser, especially if your dog enjoys chewing. If the plastic bottle breaks, it can have sharp edges that can damage your dog's mouth. Some dogs may also try to eat the plastic bottle – remove the dispenser immediately in this case.
