Can I take my dog with me to vote?

Posting photos of dogs at polling stations has become popular on social media in recent years, but are they allowed inside? Here’s our advice on voting with your dog.

Can I take my dog inside a polling station?

Whether or not you can take your dog inside varies between polling stations. Guidance from the Electoral Commission states that dogs, apart from assistance dogs, are not usually allowed inside as they can disturb voters. But some polling stations may be more flexible.

If you’re thinking of taking your dog along with you to vote, check with the venue in advance – you can do this by calling or by popping in.

Important

If your dog is not allowed in, do not leave them tied up outside as there is risk of dog theft. It’s best to leave them at home, or to bring someone with you who can wait outside with your dog while you vote.

Stick to taking photos of your dog outside the polling station.

Should I take my dog to the polling station?

Before you take your dog to the polling station, think about whether it's suitable for your dog to attend. If your dog does not enjoy crowds, it may be best to leave them at home.

If you do want to take your dog along with you, you will need to go with someone who is able to wait outside with your dog while you vote.

Can I take a photo of my dog inside the polling station?

No. The Electoral Commission states that you should not take photos inside the polling station, as it puts the secrecy of the ballot at risk.

Photographing your dog inside the polling station could accidently expose how someone else has voted. This could lead to a fine of up to £5,000 or six months in prison.

If you want to take a photo of your dog, stick to taking a picture next to the polling station sign outside the venue.

Fun fact

In some countries, animals have stood as candidates in elections. In Britain, Catmando, a ginger and white cat, jointly led the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, after both he and human candidate Howling Laud Hope received the same number of votes. Catmando’s three-year joint reign came to an end in 2002.
