Give your dog an advent calendar this Christmas

Make this dog-friendly advent calendar and enjoy the Christmas season.

This dog-friendly advent calendar is a fun activity for all the family. It can also be re-used year after year to celebrate Christmas with your pooch.

What you’ll need:

  • 24 small fabric pouches
  • 24 labels
  • Colourful twine or string
  • Scissors
  • Pens, paint and festive decorations of your choice
  • Somewhere to hang your advent calendar eg two nails

How to make your dog-friendly advent calendar

  1. Take 24 labels and number them one to 24
  2. Cut some colourful twine or string into 24 small strips (you'll use these to attach your labels)
  3. Loop each piece of string through a numbered label and attach them to each of the bags
  4. Cut off any extra string
  5. Add a yummy, dry dog treat to each bag
  6. Cut another piece of twine long enough to hang up 12 bags
  7. Thread the twine through the strings of each of the first 12 bags
  8. Cut a slightly longer piece of twine and thread through the strings of the second lot of 12 bags
  9. Hang the first row up making sure the string is tight and spread the bags out
  10. Tie the second string up looser than the first and spread the bags out

Tip

If your dog is likely to try and get to any treats, you may want to add treats to these bags one by one each morning or shortly before you give them. You can always use this as an opportunity to practice some training with your pet, and always give treats as part of a balanced diet.
