How to make dog-friendly pancakes

Whether it’s Pancake Day or you simply want to give your dog something special, our vet-approved, dog-friendly pancake recipe means that they can join in with one of our all-time favourite treats!
Important
Carefully check the ingredients below and do not feed if your dog is allergic to any of them. Always check with your vet if your dog has any special dietary requirements.
Ingredients
- 1 medium egg
- 180ml buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter (with no xylitol)
- 64g buckwheat flour
- 2 tablespoons quick-cook polenta
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 2-3 tablespoons water
- Coconut oil
Peanut butter drizzle ingredients
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter (with no xylitol)
- 1 tablespoon warm water
- Strawberries with the stalks removed (optional)
Important
Some peanut butter brands contain an artificial sweetener called xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Only use peanut butter that is xylitol-free.
Utensils
- Medium mixing bowl
- Measuring jug
- Weighing scales
- Tablespoon and teaspoon
- Frying pan
- Ladle
- Bone shaped cookie cutter (optional)
How to make your dog-friendly pancakes
- Mix the egg, buckwheat flour, polenta and baking powder together in a mixing bowl until you get a thick batter. Add water if needed.
- Let the batter stand for 10 minutes
- Heat your frying pan on a medium heat with a little splash of coconut oil
- Add a ladle of batter to the frying pan and cook for around two minutes, before flipping your pancake and cooking for a further one minute on the other side
- Pop the pancake on a plate and use your bone cookie cutter to create fun bone shaped pancakes
- Next up is the peanut butter drizzle – mix two tablespoons of peanut butter with one tablespoon of warm water until it’s a nice smooth, runny texture
- Drizzle your peanut butter sauce over your dog’s pancakes and add some fresh strawberries with the stalks removed

Note
Remember to feed your dog in moderation – you may wish to feed a smaller dinner portion after giving pancakes to keep them at a healthy weight. New foods should also be introduced slowly and in small quantities to avoid an upset tummy.
