How to make an ice lick for your dog

Beat the heat by giving your dog an ice lick this summer.

While ice lollies for humans are not suitable for dogs, you can create your own dog-friendly ice licks at home with just a few simple ingredients. As well as being a great way to keep them busy, ice licks can help keep your dog cool and hydrated.

You will need

  • A metal bowl suited to your dog's size
  • Treats
  • Water
  • Toys

Important

Not suitable for dogs under seven months old that still have their baby teeth.

Method

  1. Place some treats in the bowl
  2. Add some toys
  3. Pour water over the treats and toys
  4. Place bowl in the freezer for 30 minutes
  5. Remove the bowl from the freezer and add another layer of treats and toys and cover with water
  6. Return to the freezer for a further two hours
  7. Remove from the freezer and let it melt slightly
  8. Remove the ice lick from the bowl

Give it to your dog to enjoy!

Note

If you're using chew toys, be sure to supervise your dog at all times.

Can eating ice harm my dog?

There’s no evidence that giving your dog an ice lick or ice cubes can harm your dog – ice is not known to be connected to causing bloat. Find out more about ice cubes for dogs.

What if my dog is not interested?

To encourage your dog to try the ice lick, you can add some low-salt stock or xylitol-free peanut butter during the freezing stage. If your dog is more treat motivated, you can sprinkle in fruit and vegetable pieces for a healthier snack.
