Two cats were moments from being crushed by a rubbish truck after being taped shut inside a cardboard box and dumped near a bin on the hottest day of the year so far.

Luckily the cries of the cats inside the box were heard by the bin men who then took them into Blue Cross pet charity’s animal hospital in Hammersmith, west London, where they were checked over by vets.

The cats, who have been named Biffa and Dusty by Blue Cross staff, were found to be in good health and were vaccinated and given a worming treatment before being microchipped.

They will now be transferred to one of the pet charity’s rehoming centres where they can be assessed and found a new home.

The pair, thought to be around seven months old, were found on the hottest day of the year with Blue Cross among other pet charities putting advice out on how to look after pets during the heatwave, with temperatures set to reach 27C in London on Thursday.

Katie Shorer, Practice Manager at Blue Cross hospital in Hammersmith said: “These poor cats were terrified when we opened the cardboard box.

“They are doing well now though and have been health checked by our team. We will now be able to find new homes for them but we just wish pet owners would take their pets to their local rehoming centres or animal hospitals if they can no longer look after them rather than dump them.

“There is no shame in someone coming to us and saying they can no longer look after their pet. Our teams will happily help them to find a new home for the pet.”

Last year Blue Cross helped more than 40,000 sick, injured and abandoned pets like Biffa and Dusty.
