Martha's quest to be a pet
Greyhounds aren’t built to race – they’re meant to be much-loved pets.
And that couldn’t be truer than in sweet Martha’s case. The three-year-old ex-racer, who arrived in the care of Blue Cross Hertfordshire in January, loves sofa snuggles with her favourite people the most.
Lynsey Smith, Pet Welfare Assistant, says: “When she first came into us, she was very nervous and wouldn’t come and say ‘hi’. But now she’s so friendly and happy.
“She sleeps on her bed and curls up like a little Labrador. She’s so endearing and gentle. She was not built to race; she likes her bed and loves her food, and she’s even scared of squirrels.”
Martha has captured the hearts of all of those caring for her, and the team know she’ll make the most wonderful pet. But, very sadly, greyhounds are often overlooked by potential adopters.
It’s a common misconception that the breed needs lots of exercise and stimulation when, in fact, they’re usually happy with a short stroll and will snooze for most of the day.
Lynsey adds: “Martha is a beautiful and gentle soul. It’s cathartic to be around her, so if you’ve had a really bad day in the office and go home to Martha, you’ll be soothed.
"She’s the easiest dog to be around.”
