Mum and newborn puppies rescued
Four puppies saved from crisis by Blue Cross are now enjoying life as much-loved pets.
Dumpling, Brisket, Turnip and Oxo arrived at our Burford rehoming centre in Oxfordshire in August when they were just four days old.
They were initially rescued by another charity after mum Beanie needed an emergency caesarean which her previous owner could not afford.
After two weeks in our care, French bulldog Beanie took a turn for the worse, explains Centre Manager, Hannah Wiltshire.
“Beanie hadn’t been eating properly, was very thin and had been struggling to feed her pups. She wasn’t producing enough milk and her puppies’ weights had dropped.”
Mum and litter spent a weekend in emergency care at the vets’ before returning to the centre, where the team had to step in to supplement feed the puppies.
Feeds were done round the clock every three hours initially, before being stretched out to five to six hour intervals.
And soon enough, Beanie and her puppies started to thrive.
After starting their early socialisation work and training at Blue Cross, all four puppies found wonderful new homes and mum Beanie was adopted soon after.
As all five dogs are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, their new families will be on the lookout for any related issues such as breathing problems or ear infections.
Beanie’s new owner says: “She has settled in well… She slept a lot when we first brought her home and I literally cuddled her on the sofa all weekend. She sleeps in bed with me and has really quickly become my shadow. She follows me everywhere.”
