How to keep your cat safe during Halloween

The spooky season can be a worrying time for your cat, but there are some things that you can do to help to keep them happy and calm.

Halloween can bring lots of dangers for your cat, from sweet treats and decorations, to your cat feeling frightened of trick or treaters. Here are five tips to help keep your cat safe during the Halloween season.

Keep pumpkins out of reach

Pumpkins mark the start of Halloween, but they can be tempting for your cat to eat when left out. While fresh pumpkins are not harmful, your cat may be tempted to eat them even when they have started to rot. Rotten pumpkins can cause an upset tummy, so it's best to keep them out of your cat's reach, or to remove the pumpkin as soon as it's no longer fresh.

You should also always supervise your cat around pumpkins with lit candles inside, and make sure they're not left in an area where they can be knocked over. As a cat-safe alternative, think about swapping to a battery operated candle instead.

Important

It is not safe to leave pumpkins out for wildlife to eat. The pumpkins will start to rot, which can make wildlife unwell and pose a risk to your cat.

Use cat-proof decorations

When decorating your home for Halloween, remember to use cat-proof decorations. Candles, fairy lights and hanging decorations can all pose a risk, as your cat can be tempted to climb or play with them.

False cobwebs can be particularly dangerous as they can cause an obstruction in your cat's tummy if eaten. Keep any decorations out of reach and always supervise your cat.

Be mindful of trick or treaters

Trick or treaters dressed in costumes can be frightening for some cats, so it's best to keep your cat away from the front door during Halloween.

Keeping them in a safe room away from the door can prevent them from bolting outside if they get scared.

Note

Remember to make sure that your cat's microchip details are up to date before the Halloween season begins. If your cat does run away for any reason, it will give you a better chance of being reunited.

Provide a safe space

Halloween parties can be stressful for your cat, so it's a good idea to give them a safe space to retreat to if they feel overwhelmed. This could be a quiet room in your home where they will not be disturbed, or a cosy bed. Always provide access to their food, water and litter tray at all times.

Even if you're not celebrating Halloween at home, there may be fireworks in the area, so remember to let your cat hide in their safe place indoors, and try to avoid leaving them alone in the house.

Keep sweet treats safe

It's tempting to keep sweets and chocolate in easy reach for trick or treaters, but remember that many sweet treats are poisonous to cats. Keep your cat safe by storing treats in a secure place, where your cat is not able to access them.

Tip

If you want to safely involve your cat in the Halloween fun, you could make them their own Halloween pumpkin cat treats.
