Our values and competencies

We put people and pets at the heart of everything we do.

Our values and behaviours (competencies) define the way we do things. We use them every day to guide us, and to make sure we put people and pets at the heart of everything we do. For example, we use our values and behaviours to:

  • recruit people – we structure interview questions around them
  • measure performance
  • design our learning and development

We want to make sure that you understand who we are, what we value and how we work together.

Our values

  • Compassionate: We listen, we are non-judgemental, we are kind and caring to the pets and people we encounter, and we offer support in difficult times
  • Courageous: We make brave decisions, embrace change and encourage innovation, ensuring we always act with integrity – doing the right thing even when no one is looking
  • Inclusive: We value all our relationships and work in an open and positive culture where we celebrate our diverse talents and empower you to be you

Our Chief Executive Chris Burghes talks about our values, joining Blue Cross and plans for the future.

What are competencies?

Competencies are skills, knowledge and abilities defined by a set of behaviours that lead to great  performance and success in a job role. They describe how our roles are brought to life every day and demonstrate how as One Blue Cross we work individually and together so we can continue to improve the lives of pets.

Our competencies

  • We are committed
  • We are collaborative
  • We are empowered
  • We are open
  • We are innovative

These are our competencies which, like the values, were developed with our colleagues across the charity. We will continue to use these behaviours when recruiting, in our performance management process, when discussing career development, coaching and when designing learning and development solutions. We should see these in action every day as we apply our skills, work with others and carry out our roles.

They also complement our values and feed into our culture and, ultimately, make Blue Cross the unique and fantastic charity it is.
